During your teeth cleaning visits, there is a good chance you have heard your dentist talk about plaque. Avoiding plaque buildup is one of the cornerstones of good oral health, and it is one of the things your dentist serving Glen Ellyn will address during a checkup. What exactly is plaque? This video explains.

Plaque is a sticky film that covers the surfaces of your teeth. It consists mostly of bacteria that release acids that break down your enamel. When this occurs, you could develop a cavity. If plaque is not removed from your teeth, it turns into tartar, which can only be cleaned during a family dental care visit. Tartar causes irritation in your gums that may lead to periodontal disease if it is not addressed.
